This year marks our 9th Annual Get Fit for Fido, and we are doing it differently this year! Get Fit for Fido will only take place on December 9th at 9 am. There will be an adults class and a kids class, so we ...
I have “battled” with weight loss my entire life…anyone who has walked this road will understand what I mean when I say “battle” because it’s truly that! You win, you lose, you re-strategize and regroup to go back and fight again. I have successfully lost significant amounts of weight over my lifetime and kept it off for periods of time only to have it eventually creep back. It wasn’t for lack of trying! Really….Who can train for and complete a half marathon and not lose a single pound! That was me! Fast forward 4 years later... I face-planted with family medical issues that I had convinced myself were only affecting the males of the family. I was wrong. My two sisters had fallen to the same health issues - both at the age of 59 and guess what age I was fast approaching!!! My daughter was getting married in a little over a year and I wanted to live to see her walk down the aisle…I once again went to battle!
I tried my best to shed the weight with little success…I thought having gone through menopause that I was doomed and nothing would work. For me it was a discussion with my daughter (the one getting married…and a registered dietician) that changed my life and way of thinking. Having hit my wall I was contemplating bariatric surgery….I was beginning to feel it was my only option and my daughter had a great deal of experience working with patients who had made the decision to undergo this surgery. She shared the pros and cons and gave me the best advice….”Mom, I have watched you over the years and before you take the step to undergo surgery I want you to think about something. You are either on point with your eating habits but not as focused on your exercise or you are on point with your exercise but are not focused on your eating. I want you to commit to both for 3 months and we can talk again”. Well it took me a while to mull this over…I had to admit to myself that she was right….I had to give it 3 months so I could prove to myself that she was wrong I had tried watching my diet and exercising at the same time…how many people have walked a half marathon after all!!! Right!
So what to do…. Beth Pirtle and I, have crossed paths many times over the years. We’re neighbors so to speak. Her kids babysat my kids and at one point Beth was one of my coaches with weight watchers. I had seen Beth post on Facebook about Emerge so I IM’d her asking if Emerge could help people like me….Post-Menopausal and overweight. She invited me to come talk with her and shall we say, the rest is history. It has been just about a year ago that I embarked on this journey that I truly believe has changed my life. Beth has been a great coach, encouraging, positive and always honest - never accepting of excuses. She pushed me to achieve my personal best, encouraged me through the struggles and believed in me. 12 months later I am happy to report….My daughter was right, not me! I had in the past relied either on my eating habits or my exercise to achieve my goals. Beth has kept me focused on both. I have lost 70 pounds and am in better physical shape then I was in my 30’s. My daughter’s wedding was last week and I felt as radiant as people said I looked! Thank you Beth Pirtle!!! I couldn’t have done it without you!
I am not finished with my journey. I’d like to take off another 15 pounds but I have the perfect coach to help me achieve this milestone. I am confident that I have found the formula for keeping the weight off for the rest of my life and am doing what I can to fight off the medical issues that have plagued my siblings. If I can do it so can you! It’s never too late to take charge….not everything has to be left to genetics….you just might have to be more strategic.
After getting engaged, I started planning my dream wedding and wanted to look amazing in my dress. I've always worked out and ate healthy, but I was struggling to lose weight. After getting a recommendation from a friend, I contacted Kim at Emerge. I began working out with Kim and she monitored what I ate and my work outs. She helped me realized that I was not eating enough. I would have never have thought if I ate more that I could lose weight. She is always supportive and there for me when I had questions or needed a boost to keep me motivated. With her help, I lost 22 pounds for the wedding and I feel great. Thanks Kim!
After my son was born, I was ready to take control of my weight and get back on track. I shopped around for a good trainer and was so excited to find Kimberly. She is different from trainers at other companies because she not only gives me an amazing workout, but she watches my form to make sure I am getting the most out of the exercises.
Kimberly suggested the incredible boot camps that Emerge Fitness offers. They are a great addition to my weekly workouts. Kimberly also helped me get my nutrition under control with great meal options and substitutions. She’s very encouraging and has helped me lose 18 lbs. Thanks to her, I am focused on my goal and know that I can obtain it.
My name is Mike. Brenda and I have been married since August of 2008. After we got married we decided that we needed to get serious about our overall health and weight. Brenda was a little skeptical because of a bad trainer experience in the past. The trainer never listened and as a result Brenda’s knee was injured. I have trained with Kim in the past and tried very hard to convince her that Kim was the kind of trainer that gets to know you and what ailments that you may have. Kim has proven to Brenda that she knows the body and how far we can push certain body parts.
We have gotten serious in 2010 with our food intake and of course our cardio. CARDIO, CARDIO, that's the phrase that Kim uses to emphasize the need for 5 days a week of fat burning sessions. We have been pretty religious in our cardio this year. As a result we have lost weight and body fat too. We feel better as a whole and feel like we have control of our health again. When we are younger we feel evincible but that’s not the case as we get over the HILL (50 years old), LOL. Matt, Angie, and Beth all make Brenda and I feel like a small family at Emerge. Other clients are very supportive as well. We have a good time working out at Emerge and usually we forget about the sweat and pain until the next day. We would encourage anyone who is looking for a personal trainer to look into Emerge Fitness.

My name is Debbie and I am 53 years old. I have struggled with losing weight for the past 20 years, trying Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Medifast, Atkins, and Southbeach with no or little success. In the past I have dieted and exercised but not always together. When I met Beth I was just ready to make a lifestyle change. I’ve lived the fat life long enough and I wanted to see what life as a smaller healthier person would be like.
I have been working out with Beth since June 19, 2009 and I have lost a grand total of 84 lbs. I meet with Beth 3 times a week for 1 hour and I do 30 minutes of an interval cardio program the other 4 days. I workout 7 days a week and I now look forward to exercising. Beth has tweaked my cardio workouts a few times and I push myself to the next level. I also eat 1600 calories daily and journal, which Beth checks weekly. This is a journey for me and I am well on my way. Training, cardio, and eating healthy are the lifestyle changes I have made with Beth’s help. I am finally doing it and feeling pretty good about myself.
What can I say, I’m the classic yo-yo dieter that loses and gains 20 lbs every two or three years except when I gain it was always 10 lbs more than I had lost. Over several years I went from 225 to 291lbs. “You are Obese” were the exact words the doctor used to give me a reality check. I had to do something but it had to be something different than all the other times. Something that would guarantee I would get my health back.
When I train with Angie and Matt I know every workout has a purpose of making me healthier and more fit. If you KNOW what you are doing has been prescribed by an expert you believe in it more and you put more into it. Thanks Matt and Angie for giving me my life back. I no longer view myself as the funny fat guy, but a funny fit guy!
Angie and Matt have changed my life for the better. As dramatic as that sounds, it is true. I underestimated how my physical health and appearance affected my attitude and life. I have lost an unbelievable amount of weight and have gone from a size 10 to a size 0. I am happier, more self-confident and more knowledgeable about how to live a healthy lifestyle. I am addicted to Emerge and would recommend it to any person wanting to improve their health. I will continue here for years to come.
Before I started working out at Emerge I was eating out 4 to 5 times a week, not exercising, and feeling frumpy. "Carbs" were my best friend. With a full time job, husband, and two kids; when I had a spare minute a nap was a priority! I came to Emerge in a whopping size 18-20 and now am in a size 8. Yes, an 8! I couldn't be happier with my success thanks to the assistance of Angie. Being active now has change my life full circle. I prioritize getting at least 20 minutes of cardio in at lease 4 times a week in addition to my time spent at Emerge. I still eat out every week but my choices are smarter. Don't let that fool you I still manage to get in that plate of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy with green beans. The difference now is portion control. You don't have to give up the foods you love, you just have to learn how to fit them in the right way.
My aunt and I have now been working out with Beth since early October, both partner training one hour per week & attending Saturday morning boot camp sessions. We have both noticed a significant change in our strength & physical fitness in the past 20 weeks or so, in addition to some weight loss & body changes. One of the best things about working out with Beth is that she takes in account both of our fitness levels, ages & goals when planning each workout, making adjustments as necessary so that neither one of us holds the other back or feels as if what she's asking us to do is beyond our abilities. The boot camps are always laid back & fun, although we are always pushed to our limits & get a GREAT workout... and are often sore for days afterwards!
Angie gave me a "non-diet" diet to follow that worked. (Far superior to the hospital dietician's!) She worked with a low back problem and balance issues with what I now realize were baby steps. Through specific weight training exercises and cardio workouts, little by little, I lost weight and inches, and gained muscle mass where there never had been any. My main objective to getting healthier was achieved when my MD said I no longer needed to take diabetic medication. His instructions were to keep on doing what I'm doing. He asked how I did it. I answered- diet and exercise. I have a PERSONAL TRAINER.
2/1/06 - 205 lbs
4/1/06 - 146 lbs
My name is Lynne Morrissey. I have worked with my personal trainer for 5 1/2 months and have lost 55lbs. I had multiple health issues - hypertension, high cholesterol, and newly diagnosed degenerative disc disease with persistent back pain affecting my work. Now I am off my blood pressure medication and my blood pressure is within normal limits. My cholesterol is also controlled, and my back pain has essentially disappeared. Before losing weight I felt older than my 46 years, now I feel 10 years younger, stronger and more energetic than I have ever felt in my adult life. I have belonged to many gyms and have been on a multitude of diets, and had lost hope of ever succeeding in my pursuit of a healthy lifestyle and weight loss. This is the first time it has really worked, and this is absolutely due to having a personal trainer. It makes such a difference to have someone there to guide, motivate, and believe in me. I still have approximately 35 lbs to loose, and this time I know I will succeed. This has changed my life in more ways than I could have believed possible.
5/29/2008 252.41lbs bodyfat 48.6%
2/27/2009 187.8lbs bodyfat 30.2%
After having my son I was a good 10lbs heavier than what I would have liked to be. Since I have been training with Angie, I have lost about 11lbs and I am feeling great! Not only that, but now I can go shopping and actually get excited about trying on clothes again! Training at Emerge as helped me gained more confidence than I have ever had to be able to go to the gym on my own when I need to, knowing exactly what machine does what and be able to complete an efficient workout. Now when I leave the gym after doing a workout on my own I actually feel like I did something or just like I would if I had just finished a session with Angie. I never thought I would see the day again that I would be back to my pre pregnancy weight, but here I am staring it in the face!
I was also able to sit down with Angie and go over, just overall better choices for eating, which has definitely helped move me faster toward my weight goal. Training with Angie and the Emerge team I can honestly say that I have made exercise and more healthy eating choices a permanent part of my life and for good this time! : )
Thanks Angie and Emerge
Most of my life I've been a "chubby" person and prolly not in the best of health. Growing up I struggled with eating and for the longest time my family thought I was Bulimic. I've suffered from issues with my Blood Sugar bordering on being Diabetic since I was a kid. I just never liked eating when I wasn't hungry and being a picky eater didn't help matters. I've tried off and on over the years to get in shape and get healthy but nothing ever connected with me. Then Aug of 2012, I did a health assesment at work. I was told I was aproximately 39% body fat. I was devistated. I knew I wasn't the healthiest of people but I never thought I was that bad. Then I had my 2nd wake up call when issues with my heart finally drove me to seeing a Cardiologist for the first time. He told me that the issue with my heart wasn't related to my weight but a family health condition. I still took it upon myself that if I lost some weight that could only help things too. Even though I've been on my journey of getting healthy off and on for most of my life, I feel that my real journey began in April of 2013. Along the way, I have been fortunate enough to find a trainer that doesn't just train people for a living. Its her calling in life. SHe has seen me through some of my darkest times and no matter what I've put her through she is always there for me and helping pushing me closer to my goal. I know that I wouldn't be where I am today (mostly from the last few months) without her. I can now look in the mirror and begin to like myself for who I am and the things I have achieved. I see a stronger, happier, and healthier me. I no longer obsess over the numbers but have learned to understand them. I am down over 10% body fat and am feeling more confident. I finally got to experience the JOY or jeans shopping and surprising myself with my new size (so much so that I had to text my trainer to share)! I look forward to continue working with her getting every step closer to my goal and there after. But even more than a trainer and sometimes a therapist have I found, but I've found a life long friend.
My Co-workers cannot believe I drive about 2 hours (1 hour each way) three times a week to go to a personal trainer, especially when there are gyms and trainers a lot closer and cost a lot less. In life you have to choose what is important to you. Well the decision I made was a no brainer for me…..I will keep going to Emerge Fitness and working with Jessica. This is my story. In Jan I started to have hip pain when I ran. I was not what you called an avid runner but I would run a 5K every weekend. I tried to self treat but nothing I did would get rid of the pain, in fact it got worse. The pain got so bad that I could not even run a mile without having to stop and walk. There was a chiropractor at one of the races and I did something I never would do (but I was getting desperate)….I went and saw him. Dr Lyle was great!!! I started to see him late Jan. After 7 appointments he referred me to Emerge Fitness, more specifically to Jessica for corrective exercises. I could not tell you what was wrong with me but my muscles were all jacked up (not to mention tight….while in kindergarten I was kicked out of gymnastics for being so unlimber/tight). At first I thought I would just go a couple of times, get some exercises that I could do on my own then be on my way. The first time I walked into Emerge Fitness I knew they were different. They made you feel like you were important and you could tell they cared more about what they do and their clients then just making money. My first session with Jessica, I thought she was just way too sweet to do any good. Boy was I wrong! She is a killer in the gym. Don’t get me wrong she never yells or makes you feel weak/stupid. Not only does she know was she is doing but she knows just how much to push you so you do what you are actually capable of (not what you think you can do). She might be all business in the gym but she is also hilarious. I had only been going to Jessica for 9 sessions when she gave me the courage to sign up for my first marathon. OK, let me give you some back ground – only once in my life did I run about 7 miles without stopping and now I was going to “run” 26.2. To tell you how nervous I was…after I signed up I went to the bathroom and got sick. Jessica had her work cut out for her not only did I NOT really think I could do a marathon but I have a type A+ personality. She had to fix my body and mind. To be honest I did not think she could do it. I even made a plan to secretly try to train on my own (which the plan has been thrown away). Since training with Jessica my life has changed. I have lost more than 10 pounds, which does not seem much but these were the last 10 pounds I needed to loss after my cancer treatment (2008). I am also doing things I never thought I could ever do physically. I still cannot touch my toes but I am getting closer. I just ran 12 miles on a hilly course without stopping…..I have never been able to run hills (the 7 miles I did in the past was on a flat course). I have a huge confidence problem…or should I say I used to have a huge confidence problem. Not just with my running but with a lot of other areas of my life. Now I am confident I will be able to “run” the marathon in October. After that who knows what I will train for next but with the help of Jessica and Emerge fitness the sky’s the limit.
For those of you who caught Dawn’s post back in early 2013, you might remember Dawn having lost her first 30 lbs. Dawn’s weight loss success started with a livable exercise/workout routine and a healthy food plan which incorporated a variety of healthy food choices, in appropriate portions, while allowing her a weekly indulgence. Although Dawn had great success with this approach, the holidays came upon us requiring Dawn, personally, to rethink her weight loss goals for the duration of the season. Laying out a number of holiday goal options available (#1, continue efforts to lose weight, #2, pursue weight maintenance or #3, give herself permission to indulge with a minimal weight gain, 1-3 lbs), I explained to Dawn that all three goals were acceptable with no judgment attached. The key was to “tweak” her current food and exercise plan so that she had a clear strategy for whatever goal she chose. Dawn chose weight maintenance through the holidays, and that she did.
As we moved into January, Dawn was feeling like she needed to take a different direction in her weight loss journey. Her motivation was waning as winter was coming on strong and she did not want to go backwards as she had experienced in the past. Dawn inquired about the Isagenix 30 day cleanse plan, wondering if it might help her to reignite her enthusiasm for losing weight. Assuring her that this would be another healthy approach to weight loss, she decided to give it a try. The structure, simplicity, energy and immediate weight loss results were exactly what Dawn needed to re-motivate her. She now has an additional 23 lbs off with Isagenix which gives her a grand total of 53 lbs off.
Dawn is currently getting ready for a vacation with her family and plans to do another 30 day Isagenix cleanse when she returns. After 30 days she will transition back to the initial healthy eating plan that she lost her first 30 lbs on. Right now, Dawn plans to stay with a healthy, livable plan until she reaches her final weight loss goal. From there we’ll transition into the maintenance phase which is challenging, but Dawn’s commitment to accountability is giving her the confidence to take on any challenge. Congratulations Dawn! It’s a pleasure to be there witnessing all your successes.
When I joined Emerge a little over a year ago, I think my first words to Beth Pirtle was “I want to firm up and lose maybe 10# but I’m only willing to do so much to achieve that. DO NOT TALK TO ME ABOUT BOOT CAMPS!”.
Wow! How times have changed.
I can always find a reason NOT to exercise at home and certainly ways to get out of going to a gym. That’s what I love about Emerge Fitness. You are held accountable with an appointment with your trainer. You actually have to work out when you go there instead of socializing!
Beth has held me accountable. She honed in on my personality and didn’t push too hard too fast but as I got competitive with myself, she started stepping it up and pushing me harder and harder. I am doing things (and enjoying them) that I never thought I would do. I think when I started I could only suffer through maybe 10 minutes on the treadmill. Is was just SO boring!
So in about 15 months, I have lost about 6#, remember I only wanted to lose maybe 10. Weight has never been a HUGE issue to me, not as much as looking good in my clothes and just feeling good overall. Being a “woman of a certain age”, I know I will never weigh what I did 30 or 40 years ago and, frankly, I don’t want to. I want to be healthy as I start thinking about retirement and the fun that will bring. I am stronger and have more stamina that I ever have had and that excites me. To top it off, I now wear a Fitbit religiously, log my food and activity into My Fitness Pal.com and……..my husband and I got ourselves a treadmill for Christmas. (and, we are USING it!!!).My attitude toward fitness has changed. I am not a “fitness freak” but I feel good, I am getting to the point where I am happy with parts of my body that I haven’t been happy with in a long time and I feel like I am making smarter choices in what I eat.
I will still not do a Boot Camp though….don’t try to make me, either!
Thank you Emerge and THANK YOU Beth Pirtle. I owe more to you than I can ever repay.
